COME COMunicazionE Aperta - A Vocabulary for Aphasia

The COMunicazionE Aperta – A Vocabulary for Aphasia (COME) project, coded 2024-1-IT02-KA210-ADU-000252445 and funded by Erasmus+ Program, is aimed for Aphasia cases. Aphasia often hides behind an intact physical appearance, leaving outsiders unaware of the struggle to find the right words. COME’s mission is to ensure that no adult with aphasia is left unheard. We picture a society in which every café, clinic, and classroom offers simple, respectful communication aids, giving voice back to those who lost it after stroke, brain injury, or neuro‑degenerative disease.

  • Objectives
  • Bridge the digital gap by adapting a modern AAC app for adult aphasia. Embed technology in a supportive ecosystem—a web platform with vocabulary sets, symbol libraries, and how‑to videos. Equip the human network—train at least 300 operators, therapists, and family members across three countries. Measure real‑world impact through pilot sessions that document gains in autonomy and social participation.

  • Methodology
  • The project follows a design–test–iterate model: Co‑creation workshops with speech‑language therapists and people with aphasia to define vocabulary priorities. Technical customisation of an open‑source AAC engine, adding multi‑language support and larger symbol sets. Pilot training cycles in Türkiye, Poland, and Italy, collecting qualitative feedback and usability metrics. Continuous refinement based on user data, leading to a publicly released toolset under a Creative Commons licence.
